Sakai: How to add LearnSci LabSims or Smart Worksheets (LTI 1.3)

Notes
The LearnSci resources fully integrate with your Sakai platform. All of your resources are hosted, maintained and updated by Learning Science and are added to Sakai using our tool in just a few steps.

For help and support email support@learnsci.com.

Before you start
  1. The LearnSci LTI 1.3 tool must have been preconfigured by a Sakai administrator - if you can’t find it using these instructions, please contact us and we’ll advise further.
  2. If you would like the student grades for the LearnSci LabSim or Smart Worksheet to appear in a new column in your Sakai gradebook you need to request this by contacting support@learnsci.com. We will provide you with a custom assessment for this which you will then be able to add to your course(s) using the guidance below.
  3. Pre-existing resources added using our old tool will still work for a limited time for your reference, but it’s important that you re-add anything you wish to use during your current academic year using this new tool.

Navigate to the Sakai course where you want to add your LearnSci LabSim, Smart Worksheet or Assessment.

InfoNote: there are many places you can add LearnSci resources in your courses; anywhere you have access to the text editor provides the option to use the new LTI tool. The following is just one example of a place where you can use the tool.

Adding to a Lesson
1. Under ‘Simple content items’, click ‘add text’. You can now provide any supporting text you need, and when you wish to embed LearnSci content, click the down button on the editor to expand your choices, followed by the ‘insert content item’ button (the shopping cart icon):

2. Next, select the LearnSci tool

The first time you launch the new LearnSci tool, you’ll need to accept the privacy policy:

3. Next, select the content you wish to add to your course. Use the filter in the top right of the window to navigate between the different content areas that are available to you.

4. If you are adding assessments you can also choose whether to add these to your own gradebook here as well:

5. Once you’ve selected all of the resources to add, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the add content button.

6. You should now see the selected resources linked in your text area. Click save when finished.

7. You can then test the resources. Note that students only see the resource full size and do not see the extra navigation bar and menu options on the LearnSci platform.

Adding an assignment
1. In a Lesson, click ‘add content’ and then ‘link to an assignment’ and finally ‘Create new assignment using Assignments’.

2. Add your assignment details such as the title, instructions and due date, and then in the ‘submission type’ drop down, select ‘External Tool (LTI):

3. Tick the ‘load this tool in a new tab’ checkbox then click the ‘select external tool’ button.

4. You can now select a resource (assignments only support one selection) to add to the assignment. Be sure to select ‘add to gradebook’ so that it returns a grade into your gradebook.

5. Once you’ve finished adding all of your preferences, click ‘post’ to publish.

There are many other places you can add LearnSci resources - just look for the shopping cart icon when using the text editor anywhere in your course.
