The preferred method for giving users access to resources on LearnSci Direct is to set up single sign-on (SSO). This allows users who are logged into their own institutional systems to access LearnSci Direct and have an account set up for them automatically without the need to log in again or maintain another username or password.
Teachers can link to resources on LearnSci Direct from inside their courses on their own VLE and students are taken directly to them without the need to access the site home screen or login box. This makes the experience of moving between platforms smooth and seamless, and reduces delays and support time.
SSO is the most secure method of access and the connection can be customised to provide partial or full anonymity of your users should your institution require it.
LearnSci is a member of the UK Federation which provides a single solution to accessing online resources and services for education and research. This provides a straightforward means of providing SSO services to any other organisation that is a member (most UK institutions are signed up). Institutions that are not UK Federation members, including overseas organisations can also be accommodated.
We will need to be in touch with whoever manages your Identity Provider (IdP) in your organisation to arrange the necessary configuration on both sides. This is managed using software such as OpenAthens or Shibboleth, which will typically be the responsibility of someone in your IT department or library staff.
If you have any questions about SSO, or would like to arrange this for your existing LearnSci Direct account, please contact support@learnsci.com
